Riders and Serpents

Riders-in-training have been selected because they are good fighters, and it has been found they can communicate with a Serpent. Prospective Riders must pass a survival test or a combat test (Mar was forced to do both, haha).

Each full-fledged Rider is given an official spear. Each spear is custom made, and is marked so that people know whose it is. A Rider must always have it within arm's reach, even when off duty or sleeping. The spear is like a flag; it is disrespectful to simply drop it on the ground, or point it at an ally.

Only a few legendary heroes have been students of the Serpents. They spend time alone with them, living like ascetics. They learn from their wisdom, natural-born memories which reach all the way back to before men. Often they feel apart from the rest of humanity....
